This week I’m looking at incorporating the Nordic interiors trend in your living room. To see our tips for decorating your bedroom in this style, click here.
The furniture you choose will underpin the whole look and feel of your living room, so pick carefully. Light finish, natural looking furniture, such as the Tavistock Oak Coffee Table with Drawer (1) blends perfectly with the clean lines and natural textures and fibres of the Nordic interiors trend.
In my house, the living room is the heart of my home where everyone gathers of an evening to chat, watch telly and – more often than I would like – to eat. This means that when I’m choosing a rug for the lounge, I need one that looks good but is also hard wearing, so the rug from Marks & Spencer (5) is ideal. I like to feel snug and cosy when I’m watching telly on the sofa, and this can be hard to achieve with harsh colours like black and white – but it can be done. It’s all about texture. So match up the black and white cushion from Dunelm Mill (4) and the black and white textured throw from John Lewis (7) with the warm and soft feeling faux fur cushion from Next (9) for a sofa that ties in well with the Nordic trend without feeling too cold.
Modern lighting is a must with the Nordic trend, but keep it cosy by selecting a floor lamp that will give off warm light from a corner, such as the floor lamp from Marks & Spencer (8). The natural wooden stand and the contemporary shade on this lamp are a perfect fit for a Nordic inspired living room.
Here comes the fun bit; it’s time to choose decorative accessories and art work that will transform your living room into a space that is entirely unique to you. I’ve picked the black wire artwork from Habitat (2) and the print from The White Company (6) to fit in with the contemporary aspect of the Nordic interiors trend, but make sure you pick something you like – you’ll have to look at it every day. A chunky tea light holder, such as the one featured from John Lewis (3) placed in the centre of the Tavistock Oak Coffee Table (1) will add to the modern feel of the room and round off the interior design nicely.
In summary then, to successfully achieve the Nordic interiors trend in your living room:
1. Pick light finish, natural, contemporary furniture.
2. Choose a hard wearing rug.
3. Make your sofa cosy by mixing black and white cushions and throws with faux fur cushions.
4. Keep your lighting modern.
5. Accessorize with modern art that you love.
6. Finish with small black home accessories in the centre of your coffee table.
